SYSTEM
Ottawa School Of Art Gallery, January 2002
System is defined as a group of interacting elements forming a complex whole as well as an organized method or procedure. Both of these definitions describe the year long project that resulted in six large mosaic like paintings. Each painting is made up of sixteen images bolted together revealing a larger image that was routed out and filled with plaster 12 months earlier. Covered by layers of paint, the larger image was gouged out in the final stage of complicated and systematic process.
System is about the interconnectedness of everyday things and how everything in the Universe is made up of the same raw material, how something looks in the end is determined only by the arrangement of its’s atoms, molecules, and elements. The smaller panels that make up each painting represent the building blocks and the larger image represents the result of the arrangement. At the same time System addresses the state of contemporary painting and what a painting can be.
